New on DVD and Blu-Ray

It’s the spooky season, and there’s nothing scarier than having to cover two weeks worth of titles because you forgot to do this last week. I’ll start with last week’s big title, Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You, which is the closest thing to a 21st-century Schizopolis we’ve yet gotten, except fueled by rage at the state of society rather than melancholy. And with the discussions of horse urination replaced with visuals of horse cocks. The other new releases can’t help but look comically tame in comparison, even if they have Nicolas Cage fighting cult members with a chainsaw or Cher apparently having given birth to Meryl Streep at 3.

Catalog titles, meanwhile, are a bundle of riches for Halloween and the holidays. The sad news about the Wachowskis potentially never making a film again can be washed down with the new 4K masters of the Matrix trilogy. The sad news about Mel Gibson getting his mitts on The Wild Bunch can be washed down with the U.S. Blu-Ray debut of Cross of Iron, which seems like more the Peckinpah that Gibson would go for. Criterion gives us both a fine Halloween watch, Brian De Palma’s Sisters, and a film for anyone during any time of the year, The Princess Bride. And we’ve got some great shows getting complete-series Blu-Ray sets, namely Batman: The Animated Series and Community (and just think that this is all merely setting the table for the Shield complete series set). But in case none of that strikes your fancy, there’s always Lionsgate’s Blu-Ray of Maximum Overdrive, finally giving an ATM calling Stephen King an asshole the 1080p presentation it’s been screaming out for.
