New on DVD and Blu-Ray

Yes, I knew exactly what the header image would be when I saw this week’s titles. Setting that classic aside, we’ve got some goodies to go around. Criterion has two; the South African apartheid drama A Dry White Season and the Sam Fuller western Forty Guns (with the documentary A Fuller Life as a supplement). In case you’re still in a gunslinger mood, there’s also Shout Factory’s special edition of the Clint Eastwood western Hang ‘Em High and Kino’s releases of two minor Sterling Hayden westerns, El Paso and The Last Command. Arrow has out a box set of three of Brian De Palma’s earliest films, The Wedding PartyGreetings, and Hi, Mom!, all starring Robert De Niro. And in case De Palma perversity still isn’t enough, there’s the Blu-Ray debut of Deep Throat to tide you over. As for new releases, first and foremost is the Keira Knightley historical drama Colette, which I’m told is much more overtly queer than most other Oscar-y period pieces. There’s also Galveston, which sees Melanie Laurent directing and apparently substantially rewriting a script from Nicky Pizzapie (based on one of his books). I’ve heard mixed things, but at least it sounds like a good showcase for Elle Fanning, and god knows she hasn’t gotten enough of those with the projects she’s been choosing recently.
