New on DVD and Blu-Ray

I’m giving you all the clues this week and telling you that The Snowman is out on Blu-Ray. Any kind of whiff would be unexpected coming from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Let the Right One in‘s Tomas Alfredson, let alone one as disastrous as this one, with chunks of the movie missing and a wealth of great performers left utterly adrift. It’s bad, but it’s an outlier in what is a pretty good week quality-wise. New releases are pretty solid on the whole, including the much-discussed Blade Runner 2049 (which I liked, although it’s not Roger Deakins’ masterpiece when The Assassination of Jesse James exists, you clods), the solid Blumhouse entry Happy Death Day, and the gorgeous-looking rotoscoped Van Gogh biopic (of sorts) Loving Vincent. And catalog titles include the long-awaited U.S. special edition of Joe Dante’s Matinee, complete with a wealth of new features and the stuff included on the UK Arrow Blu-Ray, and Severin’s box set of three films from the British horror production company Amicus.
