Another light week, although definitely not as bad as last week. It’s at least a good week for classic Hollywood noirs, with Joseph H. Lewis’s Gun Crazy and Frank Borzage’s Moonrise getting well-deserved restorations from the Warner Archive Collection and Criterion, respectively. And Cohen continues the recent resurgence of Jacques Rivette films on Blu-Ray, premiering a new 4K restoration of his La Belle Noiseuse. And there are a couple of new releases worth recommending as well, namely Ai Weiwei’s documentary about the migrant crisis, Human Flow (which features Christopher Doyle amongst its twelve credited cinematographers), season 1 of the Jessica Biel-starring drama The Sinner, and the 4K BLu-Ray release of Phantom Thread, in which the resolution is so high that you can clearly see the secrets sewn and hidden in every outfit (warning: may not actually be true).
