New on DVD and Blu-Ray

A big week, with an even bigger release as its centerpiece. Criterion has compiled what is very close to being the complete work of Ingmar Bergman on Blu-Ray, organized in a mammoth box set to celebrate Bergman’s centennial. It luckily coincides with the Barnes & Noble sale, so anyone planning to get it for the holidays can cringe just a little less when purchasing it. It’s so large as to cast a shadow over the rest of the week, which would be unusually good even without it. Still from Criterion is their release of Some Like It Hot, newly restored and mercifully not graced with the original cover art (not that the current cover art is particularly inspired, but at least it’s not that). For a more affordable much-anticipated release, there’s the new 4K restoration of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which costs no more than $5 per each K in the restoration. And then there’s a whole bunch of other shit. Shout Factory is doing the lord’s work and giving us special editions of Candyman and Holy Motors, two films often mentioned in the same breath. Sony, meanwhile, is doing Soderbergh’s work and upgrading Richard Lester’s Robin and Marian. Kino is releasing a bunch of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s early films, and Scorpion is releasing John Dahl’s classic neo-noir The Last Seduction. But it all pales in comparison to Lionsgate giving us the home-video release of Little Italy, or the pizza-themed Hayden Christensen-Emma Roberts rom-com. Sadly, they did not use this as the cover art:
