New on DVD and Blu-Ray

We’ve got a wealth of good stuff out this week, starting with Criterion finally canonizing the great, royally screwed-over Elaine May with their release of Mikey and Nicky. Criterion are also finally releasing, after about a decade of speculation, Cristian Mungiu’s breakthrough 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. While they get the highbrow stuff, Shout Factory gives us a trash action twofer of 10 to Midnight and Cobra, and Arrow and Twilight Time hope to initiate a May-style critical rehabilitations of, respectively, Waterworld and John Huston’s Beat the Devil. There are only really two new releases worth talking about; The Hate U Give and First Man. I’ve only seen the latter, and while I wasn’t bowled over by it as a whole (although it has some undeniably spectacular sequences), what I’ve read on it since then has actually helped it rise in my estimation. I look forward to seeing how Chazelle builds on the radical departure this takes from his previous films.
