New on DVD and Blu-Ray

After last week’s dismal showing, this week throws a lot of stuff at us. And a good amount of it is actually worth your money! Not that you’ll find anything in terms of new releases, though. You’ve got The Angry Birds Movie, the second season of Gotham (widely regarded as not quite the worst piece of media revolving around Batman released this year), and, sigh, God’s Not Dead 2. But why fret about the lack of new options when that just means there’s more money set aside for things like the U.S. Blu-Ray debut of Buckaroo Banzai, or four American Ninja films, or Brad Anderson’s first stab at horror, Session 9? Plus, you’ve got Elaine May’s first directorial effort in 30 years with an American Masters special on her old partner, Mike Nichols, a documentary about the life of Ingrid Bergman (narrated by Alicia Vikander, because of course), several good-to-great films sadly left with Twilight Time, including Peckinpah both superior (Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia) and less so (The Glory Guys), the proto-Revenant in Warner Bros.’s Man in the Wilderness, and Universal widely (i.e. outside of Best Buys) releasing several 80s comedies (although, again, don’t buy their release of The ‘Burbs, a better treatment of it is almost certainly coming soon) and also Patch Adams. Hey, at least the latter has a genuinely excellent Philip Seymour Hoffman performance in the middle of everything else.
