New on DVD and Blu-Ray

Well, I can’t really say this is a bad week for home video releases, so I won’t. After all, any week that sees the release of Shane Black’s The Nice Guys (a loopy delight that, in a good world, would’ve spawned a weekly TV spin-off) can’t be too bad, even if that is accompanied by the release of that sequel literally no one saw to that movie that almost no one particularly liked (not to mention a 4K rerelease of the latter). And then you get good stuff like Shout Factory pulling out all the stops for the U.S. Blu-Ray debut of Martin Brest’s classic action-comedy Midnight Run, Kino releasing Fritz Lang’s multipart epic The Spiders, and Criterion upgrading the gorgeous Woman in the Dunes and introducing the British kitchen-sink drama A Taste of Honey into the Collection. Although all that good work is nearly torn apart by Amazon having the bright idea to release Todd Solondz’s Wiener-Dog on MOD, burned single-layer Blu-Ray discs, exclusively available on the website. Criterion better be plotting an actual release of that, otherwise there will be hell to pay.
