I remember reading some old article about Michel Piccoli which described his acting technique to the effect that in every film where he starred, he always was a blank presence around which everything else was organised or centered. The impassibility of his face is the key. Unlike other actors, he didn’t require much information in the course of the preparation and could understand his role by simply communicating with the director. Sometimes he didn’t even know the titles of the films where he played.
