Also also also, I’ve been telling people for a couple years now that we’re in the midst of a sort of golden age for the broadcast network sitcom, but nobody seems to pay attention to this. Thanks for highlighting a lot of the good sitcoms out there.

I maintain my objection to the dialogue while admitting that I watched the whole damn thing. There is a certain comfort in the very safe and clean depiction of 1950’s New York as it never really was, and the show is perfectly cast. But geez, that writing… It was the anachronisms that riled me up, more than the superficiality.

I generally don’t enjoy the affectatious nature of the dialogue that @Rosy Fingers objected too, but often because it seems out of setting or character. This is particularly the case with a lot of Sorkin’s dialogue for me. Here it seems tied not only to the period and characters, but kind of an elevated presentation of comedy, as a style of writing, itself.

I loved, loved, loved the scene where Abe learns Midge has a job and keeps peppering her with questions, leaving the kitchen after each one with an “Okay” only to return with a new one almost immediately. It’s a masterpiece of timing and staging, a bit of Classic comedy that wouldn’t be out of place on our best multi-cams (I’m thinking it’s something NewsRadio could have done).

The scene where Pollack and Shalhoub haggle over the ownership of their kids apartment is acting gold.
