The biggest reason I’m reluctant to tell people it’s okay to just watch that season four finale is that the whole show is so good and they shouldn’t miss out on any of it.

“You doing an AIDS thing?”
“Yeah. You doing a fake daughter thing?”
“Yeah.”
“Cool. All right, see ya.”

I definitely thought they were losing their way around seasons 6-8 but they rallied strongly after that, and I didn’t really see a dip in the latest one. It’s not as smart or iconic as some of their best work but I’d have no reservations in listing the water park episode among the funniest things they’ve ever done (and Dennis’ story was oddly touching).

My personal favorite episode is “Electronics Store”. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get an idea of what the show is about.

It really wraps up the story beautifully and points it towards something unexpected and pretty damn moving. It’s still a show where two assholes burn a good woman’s house down, but these two assholes come to a much better place.

I had honestly never even heard of it until this post. It is now at least on my radar, so you’re one step closer in your mission.

The animated drug trip episode needs to be on a top ten episodes list. It was one of my favorite episodes of any series all year.

Yeah, like I said, the first three episodes of the season and especially “Hero or Hate Crime?” do rank up there with the best Sunny for me, and I found a few other episodes pretty funny too. I don’t think the best of season 11 was quite as good as the best of season 12, but I did quite like “Being Frank,” “Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs,” “Charlie Catches a Leprechaun,” and the two-part finale. (And really, Dennis’ CCH Pounder impression would make the whole season worthwhile. Frank as “Ongo Gablogian” was also a great addition to the crew’s alter egos.)

Season 11 had a more clunkers, but I thought reached higher highs. This last season didn’t have anything that really approached classic status, for me, and there’s usually three of four of those every year. I don’t know, it felt like a step down from what was already a weak season, and coming off the heels of an episode that kind of felt like a series finale, and ending with Glenn Howerton’s possible exit… When comedies start relying on dramatic developments instead of pure jokes, that’s usually when I start to lose interest. And don’t get me wrong, this is still a very funny show. The only show that I actually keep up with. But they’ve set a very high bar for themselves, and this was the closest they came to not clearing it. And I’m the sort that would rather see the show end on a high note, than slowly dip into mediocrity.

But, you know, comedy is especially subjective. And there’s no reason they can’t bounce back next year.

Yeah, Richardson’s performance as Richard T. “I don’t know why I said T, my middle name is John” Splett was a major reason we checked out Detroiters in the first place. Sam Duvet isn’t as daffy as Richard, but he does have the same jovial nature, and the whole world of the show is naturally goofy, especially his relationship with Tim. (I knew very little about Robinson before the show, but it now seems to me that he must have been criminally underused on Saturday Night Live.)

I push Detroiters hard not only because it’s one of my top shows of the year, but it’s by far the least-discussed show in the top half of my list.
