I loved how most of the movie was outright silent – words were just plain unnecessary, and actions told us everything we needed to know. Then it got really wordy.

Oddity is a good word for that one. The mixture of these elements could add up to some sort of a personal statement, or it could just be a bad movie or a combination of both.

Trying to find Eastwood’s auteurist signature in the technical details of movie making is futile. He is utterly comfortable coloring in the lines of basic film grammar. I suspect that’s why many are baffled about his reputation. His personality is expressed in situations where where necessary acts of brutality are socially elevated into false, jingoistic heroism at odds with a character’s profound belief system. His best work explores those junctures where conscience rubs against the grain of history.

For me this scene put Season 2 over Season 1. It had S1’s mysticism, but instead of just cramming it awkwardly into a standard procedural it weaved it perfectly into the plot.

And that final scene with Reilly, McAdams (my season mvp), and Semyon’s one loyal underling reminds me of the end of The Terminator and I love it so much.

For me this was exactly what people are saying about Stranger Things-an amazing throwback childrens adventure, one that doesnt talk down or condescend.

Such an amazing intro. I was kind of let down because he had such a challenge getting a gun for most of the movie, and that made his revenge so much more tactile. Then his old friend just gave him a bunch of guns.

For me the bar bathroom killing was the high point of the movie.

I can’t call them great, but the bizarre double-tap of Absolute Power and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil coming out within a year of each other is some kinda somethin’: the former a plot-oriented play of types, the latter a loose hangout movie of characters too eccentric to be anything but real. And I will never not love the courtroom shot of the (recently passed 😢) Lady Chablis sitting in front of the Confederate flag.

The only film I would call uninteresting is American Sniper, but aside from that I’ve seen Unforgiven, Mystic River, Gran Torino, and Absolute Power. With the last being on hell of an oddity. It’s a trashy thriller with political subtext, very campy acting, and a whole slew of moments that don’t fit well together in the same movie. Maybe I just kept missing the mark on selecting the right one.
