Yeah, I'm obsessing on a Big Theory of Film History here that is a bit inconclusive, reductive, and vague at this point. Basically, what we mostly talk about as the "style" movies was conceived to reproduce, and then enhance, the audience's emotional connection to a theatrical performance. Photography, editing, and the mixing of diagetic and non-diagetic sound evolved to dissolve the boundary between characters and the artifice that is employed for the art of dramatic storytelling. If I remember correctly, the point I was trying to make is that critics often talk about movies as an art form based solely on techniques developed by the movies themselves to tell stories without much consideration for their original intent.

Anyway, all work and no sleep makes Griff a bad writer.

I'm gonna take a guess that the writer's room was largely, if not exclusively white people; the comedy has the sense that they're all awkward left-wing white people who know racism is wrong but aren't entirely sure how to not be racist, and have decided to lean into that awkwardness, and I love it.

Yeah, Logan is a huge exception here in that it builds upon the previous movies to tell its story and to give the characters real depth and sympathy - to see Xavier and Logan like that is both absolutely heartbreaking and moving (I was shocked at how much I cared). It takes a real chance simply in giving the story real dramatic stakes and weight. I like Thor but I feel no fear that he's going to die, there's no sense of loss or sacrifice.

Also James Mangold gave a shockingly intelligent interview on the problems franchise comic book movies currently have on Vulture, its absolutely worth reading. Logan feels like a direct critique even when it uses their tropes.
