New on DVD and Blu-Ray

After the awards-season surge of titles in the last few weeks, we’re back to a more tepid slate this week. The “big” title this week is the Jumanji reboot/sequel, which has made an absolutely obscene amount of money for what sounds like a half-joke premise. And then there’s Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, which has gotten such a mixed response that at the very least it seems to be an interesting failure. But I don’t wanna talk about those. Instead, I’ll talk about Robert Altman’s Images, a semi-forgotten film in his insane 70s run. It’s an unsettling little psychological thriller, with a fantastic central performance by Susannah York, some gorgeous cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond, and the closest thing to an avant-garde John Williams score, those last two things in particular being well-served by Arrow’s newly remastered special edition. And it’s just one of two high-profile restorations this week, the other being Criterion’s new release of The Passion of Joan of Arc, which finally allows Carl Dreyer’s masterpiece to be seen in the highest clarity. I don’t know how any of that connects to Shout Factory’s special edition of Joe Dante’s The ‘Burbs, but maybe I’ll figure something out and edit it in here (I won’t actually, but it’s nice to have goals).
