New on DVD and Blu-Ray

After a few weeks of sleepy-time for labels, we at least have a full roster this time around. Even the new titles are more interesting than they have been recently (although there is still chaff like Ewan McGregor’s disastrous attempt to make a movie of American Pastoral). We get boutique releases of acclaimed indies like Little Sister and The Alchemist Cookbook, a Blu-Ray of Jeff Nichols’ utterly lovely Loving, the first season of Vice Principals on Blu-Ray, and a Criterion of Kirsten Johnson’s acclaimed documentary Cameraperson. And, as always, the catalog titles provide some goodies as well. You get to see Sony flip off Twilight Time by putting out their own, actually reasonably-priced Blu-Ray of Stanley Kramer’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Universal finally put together a definitive Blu-Ray of Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Kino double-dipping their biggest Buster Keaton titles once more before the Cohen Media Collection gets to release their 4K restorations of them, the Warner Archive Collection putting out Love in the Afternoon (widely considered to not be the very worst thing Billy Wilder ever made), and Lionsgate and Mill Creek releasing suspiciously well-timed Blu-Rays of Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man and Postcards From the Edge. But, for the second time in a month, the big title here is all Mann, Michael Mann. This week marks the UK release of the new Blu-Ray of his crime epic Heat, distinguished by a brand-spanking-new 4K restoration (which is already being nitpicked online as we speak) and two recently-recorded Q&As with Mann. And in case you’re getting impatient with Fox’s American branch for not putting it out, the UK Blu-Ray is totally region-free. Just steel yourself for Mann deciding he wants to do a new cut in three years or so.
