Following last week’s blow out, the biggest release is Criterion’s edition of Stephen Frear’s queer classic My Beautiful Laundrette. A saccharine sweet tale about two guys of different races and economic backgrounds coming together to start up a laundromat, My Beautiful Laundrette still receives all sorts of critical acclaim for being…whatever it is. In my memory, it remains the joke of my family’s household. My mother took my father to it (long before I even came out), and both of them despised it, saying it was one of the worst movies they had ever seen. Whenever my mother would recommend an obscure movie, my father would look at her with a side glance and say “I let you pick out My Beautiful Laundrette.” Once I saw it, as an adult, I concurred. For me, the most memorable part of the movie is that Vanilla Ice totally stole his entire look from Daniel Day Lewis.
This week also sees the blu-ray release of the new, direct to video, Scooby-Doo and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery. This has a weirdly “high” profile cast with Matthew Lillard, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and Darius Rucker starring alongside Garry and Penny Marshall, Jennifer Carpenter, and Mindy Cohn. Do with that what you will, and let the thinkpieces of nostalgia, stoners, and hipsters roll.
In the DVD Only realm, Tangerines and Set Fire to the Stars makes their home video debut. Tangerines is a war story about an Estonian man who is trying to harvest his crop of tangerines in the middle of a Georgian (East Europe) war when two men from opposite ends of the war are injured in his yard. He has to care for the both of them. Set Fire to the Stars is a drama about Dylan Thomas in the 60s starring Elijah Wood. The Dissolve gave them 3 stars and 2.5 stars respectively.
