A very eclectic week led by Anatomy of a Fall, the hands-down winner of last year’s “foreign movie that your mom will like” sweepstakes on the back of its superb craft, unpretentious genre construction, weighty questions for anyone to have to consider, and scene that it seems impossible (or at least inadvisable) to get a dog actor to safely perform. Elsewhere, there’s reissues for John Waters, Guillermo del Toro, and Karyn Kusama, and an unlikely and unintended Abel Ferrara double-feature, two different companies releasing two lesser-known Ferrara movies in limited editions. Dangerous Game has strong fans and it earns them all from its incendiary film-set scenes, a movie about abuse that becomes an excuse to perpetuate a lot more abuse; if anybody was actually paying attention, Madonna’s extraordinary performance as an actor getting ground down into her character would’ve ended the narrative she was a bad actor. She steals the movie away from peak 90s Harvey Keitel and makes the scenes of him (as Not Abel Ferrara) destroying his marriage (to real Abel Ferrara’s then-wife) comparatively banal. Fear City is more consistent because it stays in the middle, between Ferrara’s early lurid sleaze and his later 80s/90s attempts to bring his New York grime to a more mainstream milieu. It’s not King of New York stylish and it’s not Ms .45 nasty, it’s an oddly cornball compromise between the two. But it does have a serial killer who’s like an interruption from a Paul Schrader movie in this decent nudie-bar noir.
