13-year-old me would be thrilled by the double-bill by Rango and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and good for her. Current me is a lot more invested in the 4K of Bad Lieutenant, Abel Ferrara’s masterpiece and a showcase for one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen, one where it makes total sense why almost no actor has wanted or even been able to match it. Only a total abandonment of vanity could get you anywhere close to Harvey Keitel as subhuman slime who hates himself even more than the audience does, and from there you’d still have to sell that redemption might be in reach for this detestable creature.
