The first picture that broke the internet

Celebrating the Living: Teri Hatcher

Delightfully, her win as Star Baker on a celebrity episode of The Great British Bake-Off is on her “accolades” section on her Wikipedia page. It’s only fair. She’s a brilliant baker. There was absolutely no surprise when she won the episode, and not just because Alan Carr is one of the worst bakers I’ve ever seen. It’s quite clear that she knows what she’s doing, and honestly she’d be a better judge for the show than Paul Hollywood. The show needs a talented amateur baker, not a professional, and Teri Hatcher comes across as actually liking people, which Paul Hollywood does not.

Her Wikipedia page further refers to her “commercial success” as being with Desperate Housewives, presumably because the people who laid out the page don’t remember the days when Teri Hatcher broke the internet. While today’s image is not of Teri Hatcher acting as Lois Lane, it’s from the photo shoot that was at the time the most downloaded image of all time. She seems to have a sense of humour on the subject, but you’d almost have to in order to go on with your life.

Still, her awareness of her own image does go a bit above and beyond. She’s perfectly willing to absolutely torture Phil Jupitus, sitting next to her on her episode of QI, once she’s worked out the likelihood that he’s one of the people who spent time downloading her picture all those years ago. Especially since she remains an attractive woman today. She’s bright and funny and witty, and she makes one heck of a panelist on a TV show. There’s a lot more that could be done with her, because she is so much more than a woman draped in a cape.

She’s a bit frustrated with the travails of being a woman in the industry, honestly. Yes, she is fully aware of her own desirability. She does note, though, that pictures of her are still airbrushed even though she has more than once played characters fully defined by their sexual desirability to other characters. (On Seinfeld and Night Court at very least.) She got her start as an actress as one of the “Mermaids” on The Love Boat, definitely a job that relied on being conventionally attractive even if the one Hatcher played had more to do than just that.

Hatcher is a lovely woman with a gift for comedy. She could headline a screwball comedy; there’s a long list of women we’ve covered here who could. She’s got a charm that cannot be overstated. As Lois, she was utterly believable as the smart, daring go-getter of The Daily Planet. Also utterly believable as someone that a person with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal man would fall for. Goodness knows quite a lot of other people circa 1993 fell for her as well.
