Remember when I talked about how video game movies were about to hit the big time next year with 2016 releases like Assassin Creed, Ratchet & Clank and Warcraft? Well, it looks like another big time video game can be added to the slate, with this one, an adaptation of the game Rampage, being planned for 2017. That year will also bring a new Laura Croft movie from MGM and Warner Bros. and I doubt these two will wind up being the only video game movies in 2017.
This Rampage adaptation is aiming for a summer 2017 release and will reunite director Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson after the two made New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. a huge hit with San Andreas. That summer blockbuster has grossed over $150 million domestically alone and has also accumulated over $460 million worldwide. Pretty impressive numbers right there, so it’s no shocker that the studio is looking to team the duo up again for this project.
I’ve never played the game Rampage (my video game experience primarily consists of Spyro The Dragon, Taz Wanted and Pac-Man) but the plot, which deals with three monsters tearing up a city, does seem rife for a cinematic adaptation. In terms of big monster films, hopefully its more on the order of Pacific Rim than the 1998 Godzilla feature.
