John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum Has “Excellent!” Opening Weekend As A Dog’s Journey Goes Nowhere And Sun Is Also A Star Burns Out

In just one weekend, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has exceeded the entire $43 million lifetime gross of the original John Wick movie. This guy really is worthy of his legendary reputation. Grossing $57 million this frame, John Wick: Chapter 3 nearly doubled the opening weekend of the second John Wick movie and scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a Lionsgate movie that doesn’t belong to either the Hunger Games or Twilight franchises. It’s been fascinating to see the John Wick movies grow from being a sleeper hit to being a ubiquitous element of pop culture capable of opening to such hefty box office figures. Needless to say, these impressive opening weekend figures ensure that we’ll be seeing plenty more of Baba Yaga in the future.

Avengers: Endgame finally lost the top spot at the domestic box office as it fell 53% in its fourth weekend of release for another $29.4 million, the sixth-biggest fourth weekend in history and almost exactly on par with the fourth-weekend haul of Avengers: Infinity War. Having currently grossed $770.8 million, Endgame has surpassed Avatar to become the second-biggest movie of all-time and if it plays like Infinity War from here on out, it’ll gross exactly $853.8 million. With $1.844 billion overseas and $1.614 billion overseas, Endgame only needs $174 million more to dethrone Avatar as the biggest movie of all-time worldwide. It’s a crapshoot at this point if it can get there. Fellow summer 2019 holdover, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, dropped 54% to gross $24.8 million for a $94 million 10-day domestic gross. It appears that Pikachu will top out domestically with about $130-140 million while its international gross currently stands at a solid $193 million.

Yes, A Dog’s Purpose massively over-performed in China, but I’m still shocked Universal/Amblin decided to go on ahead with a sequel in the form of A Dog’s Journey given how most live-action family movie sequels end up coming up short compared to their predecessors. Home Alone 2, Night at the Museum 2, The Princess Diaries 2, rarely do these titles measure up to their massively successful predecessors. So too did A Dog’s Journey fall short of its predecessor as it grossed only $8 million, down 58% from the opening weekend of its predecessor. This project had a lot of challenges in its way, from A Dog’s Way Home earlier this year stealing some of its thunder to an odd release date that saw it sandwiched in between family movie tentpoles Detective Pikachu and Aladdin, and this poor opening weekend makes it clear it couldn’t overcome those challenges. Looks like there’s little chance Josh Gad dog will get another silver screen adventure.

Rounding out the top five was The Hustle, which fell 53% this frame, a better second-weekend hold than the last two comedies to open over Mother’s Day, Life of the Party and Snatched. Grossing another $6 million this frame, The Hustle has now grossed $23 million and looks to finish its domestic run in the disappointing $35-40 million range. The Intruder continues to be the surprisingly leggy title of the summer 2019 box office as it dipped just 44% this weekend to gross another $4 million for a current $28 million domestic gross. Fellow holdover Long Shot fell another 46% this weekend to gross $3.4 million for an underwhelming domestic total of $25.7 million. Long Shot will likely finish its domestic run just under $35 million, the lowest domestic gross for a Jonathan Levine directorial effort since his directorial debut The Wackness.

The final new wide release of the weekend, The Sun is Also a Star, got off to a dismal $2.6 million start, the 31st worst ever opening weekend ever for a movie opening in over 2,000 locations and the worst start for a Warner Bros. wide release since the $1.7 million opening weekend of Zac Efron DJ pic We Are Your Friends (remember that movie? It existed!) At least this project cost only $9 million to make, so the financial prospects aren’t disastrous for Warner Bros./MGM but this poor start is a result of simply minimal marketing as well as having source material that may not have been as popular as the source material for films like Me Before You or Five Feet Apart.

Poms fell a sharp 61% this frame, grossing another $2 million and bringing it up to only $10 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Uglydolls, which fell 61% for a third-weekend gross of $1.7 million and a domestic total of only $17.3 million. Looks like Uglydolls will top out domestically just barely over $20 million. Breakthrough fell 59% this weekend and grossed another $1.03 million for a $38.9 million domestic gross while The Curse of La Llorona fell 52% for a fifth-weekend gross of $885,000 and a $53 million domestic gross. Tolkein dropped a whopping 67% in its second weekend, giving it another $735,000 for an anemic $3.7 million domestic total. Captain Marvel fell 60% this frame as it added $727,000 to a domestic gross that now stands at $425.1 million while fellow superhero title Shazam! fell only 34% this frame to gross another $681,000 for a domestic gross of $137.8 million.

The Biggest Little Farm had a solid expansion into 45 locations where it grossed $270,000 for a $6,000 per-theater-average and a domestic total to date of $406,000. The White Crow fared worse in its own theatrical expansion as it went into 136 locations yet grossed only $234,082 for a per-theater average of $1,721 and a domestic gross of $705,669. Debuting in limited release this weekend was A24’s newest release The Souvenir, which opened to $85,000 from 4 locations for a per-theater average of $21,000. Out of the eleven 2019 movies that have had a limited release opening weekend per-theater average over $20,000, four of them have been A24 movies. Trial by Fire had a far less successful opening weekend as it grossed just $78,822 from 109 locations for a per-theater average of $723. Finally, All Is True expanded into 20 locations this frame but only grossed $65,000 for a per-theater average of $3,300 and a domestic total of only $130,000.

The top 12 movies this weekend grossed a total of $140.9 million, a middle-of-the-road sum for a pre-Memorial Day weekend gross and down 30% from this same weekend last year when Deadpool 2 opened. Nineteen days into May 2019, this month has grossed about $675 million and needs just under $470 million more to surpass May 2013 to become the biggest May in history. Honestly, whether or not it can do that will really come down to how well Aladdin does over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
