New on DVD and Blu-Ray

Even more than normal this week, we have a good selection of catalog titles while there’s nearly nothing to recommend in terms of new titles. There’s the winning Shawn the Sheep Movie, I’ve heard okay things about American Ultra, and, uh, some people liked Ricki and the Flash, I guess, and that’s about it. With that out of the way, we’ve got some gems out this week. The big ones are the Criterion titles, and the biggest one is D.A. Pennebaker’s Dont Look Back, the Bob Dylan documentary which is getting an absurdly loaded release, with features on the film itself, Dylan, and Pennebaker. There’s also the reissue of Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru, which will make you cry if it hasn’t made you cry already.

Otherwise, the biggie is the collection of many of the Quay brothers’ short films on Blu-Ray, alongside a short Christopher Nolan documentary about them. Olive Films has its typical overload of MGM titles, with John Sayles’ Eight Men Out standing out of the crowded bunch. And if you want to see the epitome of strange bedfellows, John Cassavetes being produced by Stanley Kramer, Kino has you covered with A Child is Waiting.
