New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This is very obviously a week where some studios are dumping their dregs on home video (remember the Flatliners remake?) so no one in a post-Christmas malaise will bother to find them, but there’s actually some pretty good stuff to be had this week. Chief among them is S. Craig Zahler’s follow-up to Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, which has rather unexpectedly made people say nice things about Vince Vaughn again. The only other new release worth giving a second look is the Discovery Channel miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber, in which Paul Bettany dons the hoodie and stache and hides from Agent Sam Worthington (look, I swear I’ve heard this was actually good). Catalog titles are also spotty, with Universal giving us the never-awaited Blu-Rays of Fletch Lives and that Tim Allen comedy that’s just Witness, but also Ron Howard’s solid The Paper (making its debut in a widescreen home video release) and Carl Reiner’s inventive noir parody Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. And… uh, that’s pretty much it for good stuff (sadly, the can’t-miss prospect of a remastered Terminator 2 disc comes with the caveat of the disc looking like ass, with the color timing and grain structure completely fucked up).
