New on DVD and Blu-Ray

As is custom with near-end-of-the-year weeks, we have a pretty anemic selection of titles, although fans of all kinds of cult cinema should be reasonably pleased. Arrow pulls out all the stops for their releases of Blood Rage (which contains three separate cuts of the film plus tons of interviews) and What Have You Done to Solange (featuring a Kim Newman-Alan Jones commentary and several interviews), Criterion resurrects Howard Brookner’s little-seen documentary Burroughs: The Movie and fills its release with extras (including a commentary by Jim Jarmusch, who worked as a sound recordist on the film, plus interviews and a 30-minute experimental edit of the film), Blue Underground presents brand-spanking-new 4K restorations of Jess Franco’s Eugenie and Marquis de Sade’s Justine, and Scream Factory brings the classic horror-thriller The Car to U.S. Blu-Ray (although there’s no point to owning it if you already have Arrow’s U.K. Blu-Ray of it). As for new releases, unless you want to hurt yourself, the only one you should probably look into buying is Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, a thoroughly entertaining motion picture which looks great thanks to Robert Elswit and has a true “star-is-born” performance from Rebecca Ferguson. Or, of course, you could buy Triumph of the Will.
