New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This is a pretty damn good week for home video, highlighted by Criterions of two of the finest films of the 90s; Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man and Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. I’ve actually had access to the release of Virgin Suicides and I can assure you that it’s great, with a fantastic transfer and some fascinating bonus materials, particularly Coppola’s early short Lick the Star (which has also been thoroughly restored) and an interview with writer/editor/actress Tavi Gevinson about the film’s impact on her as a teenager. And the movie itself is still a masterpiece, and if you don’t like it, maybe I don’t like you. I haven’t gotten to the edition of Dead Man yet, but I’m sure it’s great too.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty of good stuff to be had. New releases offer Paddington 2 and other movies that are not Paddington 2 or which seem to be the complete opposite of Paddington 2, namely Scott Cooper’s latest exercise in grim machismo, Hostiles. And catalog titles are even better, with Olive giving us Blu-Rays of John Boorman’s Hope and Glory, Richard Benjamin’s Mermaids, and John G. Avildsen’s Joe, Arrow giving us a newly-restored Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Shout Factory satisfying the three people who’ve been craving a high-definition release of Doctor Detroit (sure, they’re also putting out Albert Pyun’s Cyborg, but can Cyborg say that it has Dan Aykroyd as a metal-handed pimp?).
