New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This week, 4K TVs are finally justified, now that you can watch Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman in glorious native 4K. The big releases this week are the four 80s/90s Batman films, including one of the most insane studio blockbusters of all time, its good-but-compromised predecessor, its at least endearingly cheesy follow-up, and also Batman & Robin. All four also include fully remastered and remixed Blu-Rays, so you have no excuse to not buy Returns at the very least. And if you’re compelled to own the Schumachers too, you can also buy Veronica Guerin to complete your Schumacher collection.

Normally, I’d struggle to fill this next paragraph, but god, there’s so much shit out this week. Another big 4K reissue is of Barry Levinson’s The Natural, a movie I have not yet seen but imagine is probably not as good as Avalon. Also not as good as Avalon? All three Toy Story movies, also out this week in 4K, although that’s just a matter of Avalon being such a high bar that they only can’t quite reach it. The same goes for Sebastian Lelio’s Gloria Bell, a lovely little character study with an excellent Julianne Moore performance at its center. And in Gloria Bell, Gloria makes an ill-advised trip to Las Vegas, perhaps tying it into the Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas Cinematic Universe.

What else? A lot else, some of it involving American quilt-making (I’m speaking, of course, of A Madea Family Funeral). There’s the overdue Blu-Ray of what is looking to be just the first stop in Florence Pugh’s world domination plot, Lady Macbeth. There’s finally ownable proof that Terry Gilliam did in fact make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. There’s three of Ingmar Bergman’s toughest movies together on Blu-Ray, for those who still aren’t quite ready for the toughness (on both the soul and the wallet) of Criterion releasing every Bergman movie together. There’s the easily-top-ten Tom Selleck vehicle, Mr. Baseball. And there’s the easily top-twenty Pauly Shore vehicle, Jury Duty.
