After my rudeness to them last week, Kino looks to prove me wrong this week with fine treatments of three former Criterions, all directed by the great Jean-Pierre Melville; Bob le Flambeur, Le Doulos, and Léon Morin, Priest. I’ll never doubt them again, at least until their next fuck-up, at which point they’re dead to me. But at least then, there’ll still be Vinegar Syndrome, who this week is releasing a new 4K restoration of Robert Downey Sr.’s underground classic Putney Swope, an influence on everyone from Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson to [cancelled comedian name redacted].
