New on DVD and Blu-Ray

After the studios were asleep last week, we’re back to a much healthier bounty this week. The one I’ll be getting at the first chance today is the Criterion of Greg Mottola’s The Daytrippers, and you can hopefully expect a summary of Steven Soderbergh’s commentary on it tomorrow. Will it redeem my opinion of Soderbergh after he made one (1) bad movie? Probably. Anyway, there’s a lot else, including both of the two (2) indies that made any money this summer; The Farewell and The Peanut Butter Falcon. I have not seen The Peanut Butter Falcon on account of it being called The Peanut Butter Falcon, but The Farewell is very good indeed, and I look forward to seeing Lulu Wang expand on a style that’s already quite impressive. She at least has to do better than former indie family drama specialist Bart Freundlich, whose latest film After the Wedding allegedly premiered at the same Sundance as The Farewell and Peanut Butter Falcon, was allegedly released in theaters this summer, and now allegedly comes out on Blu-Ray, though I personally doubt it. Surely a movie with Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, and Billy Crudup would have some more awareness than literally no awareness at all.

Moving into catalog titles, Kino’s running the table on 70s cinema this week, including Don Siegel’s Charley Varrick, Michael Cimino’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (finally now free of Twilight Time’s possession), and the oddball conspiracy thriller Winter Kills. Arrow does pretty well too, with their Blu-Ray of Anthony Mann’s The Far Country. And yet, I can’t help but say that the week belongs to Shout Factory’s Steelbook of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which I say not only because Popstar is a delightful movie, but look at this:
