New on DVD and Blu-Ray

For your viewing pleasure this week, the end of whatever good will JJ Abrams still had as a director. Even for all the jokes about him not being able to end as well as he starts, The Rise of Skywalker surprised with how thoroughly it dropped the ball handed to it not just by The Last Jedi but even by the more intriguing elements of The Force Awakens. Its shambolic failure sets the tone for some of the other titles this week, including the Weinstein-butchered, recut, and then ignored The Current War, and Vittorio De Sica’s Indiscretion of an American Wife, cut to ribbons by David O. Selznick. Thank god for Criterion, especially their Blu-Ray of James Whale’s filming of Show Boat but even them releasing Barbra Streisand’s largely forgotten The Prince of Tides. Whatever you think of her or the end result of her work, Streisand gets her exact vision on-screen, and that vision does not involve the dead speaking.
