New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This week sees Paramount trying their hand at being a boutique label with “Paramount Presents”, the inaugural titles being double-dips of Fatal Attraction and To Catch a Thief (I guess chosen because Paramount first wants to attract its horniest customers) with new 4K remasters and the first-ever Blu-Ray of the one Elvis movie people can agree is actually good, King Creole. All of these releases are unavailable to order on Amazon after all of four (4) hours following their release, and the double-dips both drop substantial numbers of features from previous Blu-Rays, so their model seems to aim more for Twilight Time frustration than Criterion fanciness. Meanwhile, Mill Creek, despite their second-rung status, continues to put out great shows of this century on Blu-Ray, this week bringing the complete series of 30 Rock. And that’s before getting into real-deal Criterion, who have given the key Czech New Wave film The Cremator a long-overdue American release.

I couldn’t find even a sweaty, let alone natural, transition from that to this next part, so I won’t try. Floria Sigismondi, the director of several iconic music videos and the perfectly okay The Runaways (blessed mostly with a superlative Michael Shannon performance), remade The Turn of the Screw, previously filmed as one of the greatest horror films of all time. The Turning, the sorry, apparently F-worthy, result that came from this, is now on Blu-Ray. Babalugats, you know what you must do.
