New on DVD and Blu-Ray

The big title this week is Birds of Prey, a movie which promises two things; eye-popping style (courtesy of a team of pros, including DP Matthew Libatique) and the chance to see movie stars and should-be stars cut loose. It succeeds on both those fronts (the latter especially, most strongly felt with Ewan McGregor’s grotesque villain performance and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s wonderful comic take on the stoic badass), and thus I can forgive faults like its hit-or-miss jokes or the flashback structure which unnecessarily ties itself into knots. If you’re looking for more of a well-oiled machine, or if you’re just looking to get equal doses of testosterone and estrogen this week, there’s Criterion’s release of John Sturges’ The Great Escape. Or if quarantine has just completely broken you, you can double-feature Idle Hands and Blumhouse’s attempt to make Fantasy Island into a horror film. No judgment, it really do be like that sometimes.
