New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This week sees the release of what hopes to be the first of several box sets collecting the best of the Columbia/Tri-Star catalog in beautiful 4K. Their selections for this first set are quite eclectic. Lawrence of Arabia in the highest possible resolution is a no-brainer, as is Gandhi even if Gandhi isn’t nearly as beloved as Lawrence. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington isn’t as epic as those two but is such a classic that its inclusion is perfectly reasonable; same with Dr. Strangelove, though it’s a very jarring tonal shift from everything before it. And finally, we skip over the 70s entirely and land on two 90s titles that make sense together (endlessly-quoted comedies about sports) but maybe not with the rest; A League of Their Own and Jerry Maguire. There’s really something for everybody here, and consumers will be lining up at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to show them the money! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

What else? Not much else. Criterion finally gets into the Buster Keaton business after getting to every silent-comedy icon before him, releasing his first and best MGM film The Cameraman. Paramount gives us the pleasure of Tak Fujimoto cinematography in high-definition with their Blu-Ray of Pretty in Pink. And Shout Factory hears our cries for more than one Christ and gives us a whopping Three Christs, played by Walton Goggins, Peter Dinklage, and Bradley Whitford. If it hadn’t sat on a shelf for three years and been directed by the man who brought you Righteous Kill, I might be more excited for that premise with that cast.
