New on DVD and Blu-Ray

Halloween has been over for a matter of hours and we’re already being bombarded with the studios’ Christmas products, and I see people on Twitter are already listening to the goddamn Mariah Carey song; Christmas’s stranglehold on the culture must end before it reaches even further back. I don’t have much against any of the Christmas titles out this week, except that the thought of The Polar Express, already not looking its best in regular HD, in 4K is somewhat troubling (but I’d be first in line to buy a Beowulf 4K). But my heart is much more with something like Daisies, which sees the wasteful consumption of the holiday season and pushes it long past the point of alleged “good taste”. That’s the easy highlight of the week, though there’s also 4Ks of Piranha and The Running Man, as well as Tom Cruise’s latest movie about being god, or at least a god that millions are still eager to bow down to (I don’t count myself out of that).
