New on DVD and Blu-Ray

And we’re finally back to normal. Studios have come out of hibernation and are releasing something for everybody. We have largely not-terrible new releases; Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon is reportedly solid and has more than sufficient amounts of pure John Malkovich ham, The Accountant apparently isn’t as bad as its Rain Man Identity-esque logline makes it sound (and it’s got that Seamus McGarvey magic, although likely in a less pure form than it was in Nocturnal Animals), and The Birth of a Nation… well, Nate Parker’s crimes there are at least less severe than his crimes in real life (although wasting the DoP of Soderbergh’s non-Schizopolis projects from 1993 to 1998 is not a crime I look lightly upon). And catalog titles are better, with a Criterion Blu-Ray of the all-time classic screwball comedy His Girl Friday, which comes packaged with a new restoration of the original release cut of The Front Page, an earlier adaptation of Friday‘s source material, being the most tempting option. There’s also two new releases in the (sadly BD-R) Sony Choice Collection line; The Triplets of Belleville and Spanglish (I assume the latter is “choice” only in the sense that Sony made the choice to release it), as well as a mainline remastered Blu-Ray of somebody’s favorite Vin Diesel movie, xXx. And for you UK wankers who don’t want Arrow’s full Woody Allen set for whatever ungodly reason, there’s now separate Blu-Rays of the last two films in the set; the wonderful Broadway Danny Rose and the very best film Allen (or maybe anyone) has ever made, The Purple Rose of Cairo.
