New on DVD and Blu-Ray

As is customary for the very end of every month, home video companies have gone to sleep and left us with the dregs of their catalogs. But there’s still fun to be had. New releases are admittedly very dire, with not one, but two Madea films, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (the title says it all), the long-delayed Jared Hess mediocrity Masterminds, and season 2 of Ballers. But there’s also Disney releasing Mira Nair’s Queen of Katwe, a lovely movie that got the shaft in theaters, and… okay, that’s it. But catalog titles are okay. There are some good horror titles out this week, especially Lionsgate’s releases of Ken Russell’s The Lair of the White Worm and Bob Balaban’s Parents and Scream Factory’s releases of the two Poltergeist sequels. We’re also getting a Warner Archive Blu-Ray of Vincente Minnelli’s Bells Are Ringing, and, if you live in the UK or are region-free, Arrow Video’s release of Brian De Palma’s Raising Cain, which matches Scream Factory’s stateside release (including the restructured fan edit-turned-director’s cut) and adds a visual essay by Chris Dumas and an interview with composer Pino Donaggio.
