Taco Break: Ways Jokes, Volume II

Posted By Tristan "Drunk Napoleon" Nankervis on November 20, 2023 in Features, Other Media | Leave a response

You ever wonder why we don’t do Taco Breaks over again after a while? Beloved Soluter vomas once remarked that, whenever we do one of these, he always knows there are a million examples but none of them jump to mind until much later. Surely a do-over lets us not only find those examples again, but bring up the new examples that have come up since the original article.

Anyway, this is one of the biggest Simpsons examples of a Ways Joke for me. Even by Homer’s usual standards, these are a nonsensical bunch of statements for him to make – completely disconnected from reality! It feels a bit in-character for him – Dan Castellanetta plays it weirdly muted, which makes him sound like he’s barely listening in the first place, but I can also just about see the logic Homer is operating under too. But it’s so ridiculous, so out-there, that I consider this the most potent moment of pure creativity the show ever did. Other jokes have been more disciplined and presented in better crafted ways, but this one stands out there for making me wonder how the hell anyone ever came up with it.
