Madonna and Julius: A Cinematic Retrospective – SHADOWS AND FOG (1991)

Madonna
1991 was a year of recreation. May 1991 saw the release of Madonna: Truth or Dare, but, after that, Madonna laid low. Madonna didn’t even release a music video for the second single from The Immaculate Collection, Rescue Me. She was busy working on her upcoming album, Erotica, and her Sex book, both of which would be released in 1992.

However, the video for the second single from 1992’s The Immaculate Collection, Deeper and Deeper, possesses an arthouse mentality similar to Shadows and Fog. The video was intended to be a throwback to 1970s grindhouse, specifically Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey and Luciano Visconti.

Between the Truth or Dare movie and July’s A League of Their Own, the only thing we saw of Madonna was Shadows and Fog, and even that was only a glimpse.

If I remember correctly, nobody could stop talking about Truth or Dare for MONTHS. The conversation around Truth or Dare went on and on, and then continued when Truth or Dare hit VHS in late 1991.

I don’t remember Shadows and Fog, and it’s a weird mixture of cerebral Woody with caricature Woody. It’s like Woody inserted himself into an old Ufa film or The Third Man. There isn’t much to it.

Madonna
There is even less to Madonna’s role in Shadows and Fog. Confidentially, I kept this week’s entry because it gave me an excuse to put Deeper and Deeper as the header.

Her role in Shadows and Fog is less than 3 minutes. And, she’s not good in it.

So, that’s about it. She’s flat, minorly seductive, and just plain dull. Especially in the final section when she’s in the background of Mia Farrow’s blow out, she just isn’t there.

Her voice gives her away constantly. She isn’t half bad in the beginning, but gets steadily worse. By the end, she can’t get any force in her voice. Like she didn’t want to be there. Yet, she’s working with Woody Allen. She got her name on the poster for this. FOR THIS!  Ugh.

Julius
That’s about all I have to say about this. There isn’t much. I’ll just finish this out. I have nothing much interesting to say about a 3 minute performance.

Julius’ commanding rule about film: Don’t Be Common. He believes the worst thing in the world is for a film to be like every other film, with a secondary crime of being a film with little to no ambition.
